City of Chula Vista Hits Pause on Christian Latina for Human Relations Commission

At the Chula Vista City Council meeting on May 14, 2024, Mayor John McCann pulled Item 11.1 - the appointment of Martha Souza to the city's Human Relations Commission.

He stated his reason was to give staff more time to do some research, but given that several public commenters who spoke that evening, it seems there was an orchestrated campaign to oppose Souza's appointment based upon her deeply held religious beliefs and past actions to protect children.

One repeated theme from those in opposition was Souza's past protest of 'Drag Queen Story Hour' at the Chula Vista library in 2019, which speakers labeled as a blanket anti-LGBTQ stance against that community.

What those commenters failed to mention, however, was that the two drag queens who read to children also host a YouTube channel featuring a sexually explicit video where they dub themselves 'The Hottest Exxxotics'.

Their lyrics are GRAPHIC. Here is an excerpt:

Don't go chasing DL Bros
Just stick to the queers and the twinks that you're used to
I know that you're gonna use your dildo or just your palm
If you're lucky put your fist up his ass

So was Ms. Souza's protective stance off the mark? You can learn more about the past controversy from an excellent article by Eric Bartl in The San Diego Reader magazine.

Martha Souza is also a leader of 'Lexit' in San Diego -- a movement that urges Latinos to reject the ever-progressive ideologies of the Left and instead embrace traditional values.

There is a troubling trend to paint anyone who espouses traditional beliefs as "anti-LGBTQ", which is almost universally false. What most Christians oppose is the 2nd-hand or premature sexualization of children, and that is the essense of what Ms. Souza seems to have been protesting.

Those deeply held beliefs - along with her 1st Amendment right of expression - should not be a reason to stop her appointment to the City of Chula Vista's Human Relations Commission.

Diversity must include diversity of thought and beliefs. Otherwise, you have a silo, not a Human Relations Commission.
